What is a Designation of Origin and what are its requirements?
A Denomination of Origin is a certification that protects and recognizes the origin of a wine, guaranteeing that it has been produced in a specific region with certain characteristics. This certification ensures that the wine meets established quality standards.
Within the European classification system, there is the Protected Designation of Origin, which covers different categories, including the Designation of Origin and the Qualified Designation of Origin.
Requirements to obtain a Designation of Origin
To obtain any of the different Denominations of Origin, the wine must meet a series of requirements and demands:
- Delimited geographical area: Grape production, winemaking and bottling must take place within a specific region.
- Authorized grape varieties: Only grape varieties approved by the DO’s regulatory council may be used.
- Specific production methods: Established cultivation, harvesting and winemaking practices must be followed.
- Quality control: The wines undergo chemical and organoleptic analysis to verify that they meet quality standards.
- Production history: It is necessary to demonstrate that the region has a consolidated winemaking tradition before obtaining certification.
Types of Denominations of Origin in Spain
There are different categories of wine Denominations of Origin in Spain. Each one establishes regulations regarding grape varieties, production methods, and quality controls.
1. Qualified Designation of Origin
D.O.Ca wines are the most prestigious Denominations of Origin for wine in Spain, and only two regions have achieved this status: Rioja and Priorat. To achieve this designation, wineries must meet strict quality controls and demonstrate a solid winemaking tradition.
2. Designation of Origin
The next level is the D.O. with less stringent requirements than the D.O.Ca., but equally rigorous. The region must have an established reputation and be officially established for at least five years.
3. Quality Wine with Geographical Indication
These wines are produced in a specific region and meet quality standards, but do not require a minimum age.
4. Vino de Pago
Vinos de Pago are a category of exceptional quality awarded to specific vineyards within a Denomination of Origin.
5. Vinos de la Tierra
This category is intended for wines that do not meet all the requirements of a D.O. but that reflect the characteristics of the territory in which they are produced.
How many wine appellations are there in Spain?
There are 70 wine Denominations of Origin in Spain and more than 100 protected wine-producing areas. Throughout the different autonomous communities, many wine varieties are produced with unique personalities, depending on the climate, soil, and native grape varieties.
